A Boutique Life 2012

As the subject of resolution comes to play so does the time to revise your life and goals. At Allie Ollie we look to build a life filled with boutique indulgence in 2012! This is not necessarily a matter of expenditure but rather lifestyle. Simple things like displaying nicely your accessories or creating a style book can upgrade you life entirely. Treating yourself in daily life to boutique touches is sure to elevate your sense of self and style for the new year!

To begin, an orderly wardrobe is necessary. If you did not wear it in 2011 and would not wear it out this week, purge! Once items you will not wear are removed, you can put togethor a wardrobe that makes looking stylish a part of each day in 2012. Then you must organize what you have. Catagorize garments into Basics, Tops, Bottoms, Evening, and Outerwear.

Basics should be most accessable and include:
Leggings
Camisoles
Layering solids
Black Pant
Black Skirt
Denim (If you wear denim regularily)

Take a good assesment of your basics and make an investment in this area if lacking. The idea of  basics is that you work them daily and interchange unique / style statement peices to create different looks. It is common to have a closet stuffed with fun, printed peices and lack a basics foundation to build on.
See the Allie Ollie Wardrobing Basics Blog

Next, try on all tops and bottoms. Scrutinize condition, style statement, and of course fit. If it looks worn out, is unflattering or screams "dressing too young!", you will not feel stylish in it. It is better to have a lean wardrobe of pieces you love and  feel great in than a closet stuffed with so-so blasts from the past. Once you have wittled...outfits must be made. Perhaps you have great pieces that are not worn due to not knowing what to wear them with. Set aside pieces you cannot match up with what you have.

For evening wear and outerwear, try all on and consider the last time you wore each. How did you feel in it? Where would you wear this next? If you still have it because you had a memorable time wearing it and it is not your wedding gown...Sayonara! Do not save garments for the memory, that is why you have your photos. It is unlikely that your daughter, niece or whomever will want your old clothes. Seriously, garments are not made with the quality or timeless style that your mother's and aunt's vintage pieces were. If you are holding onto things as heirlooms, try to pass them on now so they might actually be worn again.

Finally, you have an orderly wardrobe that will allow you to be a stylish, boutique woman for 2012! Now schedule an appointment for a wardrobing session with one of our stylist to match up ensembles for that pile you made of pieces that needed to be stylesd with coordinates. Also, a great opportunity to build up your basics. Enjoy a chai latte or champagne during your session and enjoy the 15% discount.

Decoding Holiday Style...Open House to Formal

As we enter the Season of Sparkle, be prepared for any gathering or affair! Having a pulled togethor holiday wardrobe is easy at Allie Ollie. Our stylist are taking appointments for holiday make-overs. A few pieces can build a seasonal wardrobe to dazzle.

There are 4 common dress codes for holiday parties:

Open House: Private party, typically in the home of friends / co-workers / family. Go outside the box, you are more fun than a red turtleneck ;) Try a poncho over palazzo pants, unexpected color schemes, glitzy tops, and an evening bag. Accessories finish the look so do add polish with a coordinate scarf and jewelry. Looking effortlessly fabulous is the key for open house parties and flowy clothing lends to this impression.

Cocktail Party: Can you say LBD (little black dress). The single most key piece in any evening wardrobe is the LBD. As such, they are sold everywear! Be picky...find the perfect little black dress, the one that will stand out and yet be versatile. Texture adds great interest as do quality fabrics. Sheath cuts have gained in recent popularity since Michelle Obama's influence on fashion.

Semi-Formal: The event is one at which to impress, although not fancy enough for a gown. One of the more difficult situations to dress for as semi-formal type events vary greatly from work parties to cruises and benefit affairs. Choose stand-out rich colors that attract and avoid an over dressed look. The great thing about investing in semi-formal pieces is that they are often seperates that can mix and match for versatile use.

Formal: Pull out all the stops! BLACK TIE affair...Go for a more polished, elegant look. Select items of high quality that have something different or detailed about them. Think Luxe, velvets and satins work well for evening and the colors rich or bold.

AZ DAILY SUN ARTICLE

The sweaters hanging on racks throughout Allie Olson's small store in the Flagstaff Mall are one of a kind.
The exotic designs incorporating ruffles, faux-fur lining and other flair are often a collaboration between Olson and West Coast clothing designers.
The 26-year-old businesswoman has worked closely with Los Angeles-based designers for the last three years to outfit her stores in Sedona, Prescott and, since August, here in Flagstaff.
In the beginning, Olson remembers leaving her home at 2 a.m. for "crazy" 24-hour trips to Los Angeles and back in order to pick out clothes for her 2,000-square-foot store in an outlet mall in Sedona.
Today, there are fewer 900-mile round trips on her calendar.
Owning a small chain of retail clothing stores allows Olson to work directly with designers. Her eye for detail has allowed her to carve out a niche in northern Arizona.
"You don't find them anywhere else. We have sweaters that have all kind of faux-fur trimmings and color -- just a lot of style for one piece of clothing," she said.
The stores carry more than just sweaters, of course. Allie Ollie sells dresses, tops, pants, jewelry, purses and other accessories.
Designer brands carried in her store include clothing from the Sharon Max collection, Danielle Jeans and Sacred Threads. The last line is a point of pride for Olson.
"They are a bit more hippie-influenced, natural-fiber clothing. I like that clothing line because it supports elevating women in India," Olson said.
Not that her customers in Flagstaff want the same items as customers in Prescott or Sedona.
"In Flagstaff, it is kind of fun for me because we are carrying things here we don't carry at the other stores," she said. "It is little bit more casual."
The stores are a culmination of a long-held dream of hers.
"I've known I wanted to have clothing stores since I was a little girl," Olson said.
But in 2008, at the height of the recession, Olson found little support among her family and friends.
"They were never highly encouraging," she said. "They never discouraged me, but they didn't write a check."
Instead, she wrote the check from the savings she had amassed while working as both a Realtor and an appraiser.
"I saved it all; it took me years to do it," Olson said.
She argued to anyone willing to listen that women still wanted to shop, even in a recession. Olson said women shop for new outfits for a variety of reasons, noting even those who lose their job might need a new outfit for a job interview.
"I had the goal where adult women could shop and find trends as well as great basics," she said.
The store's name -- taken from what her father called her as a little girl -- is now synonymous in the mind of some northern Arizona shoppers with that same goal of specialty shopping for adult women.

How to Dress while losing weight?

Dressing in Transition

Have you lost weight without anyone noticing? Feeling dumpy in your former favorites?

Commonly our shoppers wonder what to wear while losing weight and changing sizes. Purchasing an entire new wardrobe for each dress size is as impractical as having nothing to wear for months while changing sizes. Why not build a wardrobe that will transition with your body and continue to be useful at your goal weight? Allie Ollie has many styles that will offer chic options during your transition, many of which fit well through several sizes. Follow our guide to dressing in transition…

#1  MOTIVATE yourself through reward along the way

You are working hard to lose that weight and nothing will keep you motivated like the compliments you will get in an outfit that fits your body. Loosen up and give yourself a couple bucks to spend on the way to your goal. So often a customer will come in proud of their weight loss, wearing their old clothes that are several sizes too large. This gives a dumpy look that does not show off your changing figure. Oversized jeans, t-shirts, bulky sweaters, etc may have helped hide the heavier you…they will however hide your progress from the world as well. Show off that weight loss! Treat yourself to a flattering tunic, palazzo pant or flyaway sweater that will both highlight the progress and still fit you at your goal weight.

#2 STRETCH allows for garments to fit through several sizes

The quality fabrics that contain stretch abilities today abound at Allie Ollie and offer a variety of options in transitional dressing. A travel separate for example typically fits a range of 4 sizes. (eg our size XL separates fit from size 20 to 14). We do not suggest shopping for your goal weight. Buy what fits now and will still flatter later. Our stylists are experienced in the dance of transitional dressing and can pull out styles that will offer stretch and style now plus a sleek fit later.

#3 WORK IT by wearing comfortable on the go styles

One of the best ways to maintain your new look is to keep active. While you may be thinking to wait on shopping until you can fit into tight structured styles, they often do not offer an active lifestyle. Building a wardrobe of stretchy, comfy and chic looks is our specialty. We promote looking great while feeling free and able to jet off on a trip, take walk and even chase after kids / grandkids. Build a stylish, easy fitting, wardrobe of ease at Allie Ollie.

Confessions of a Fumbling Fashionista©

By, Megan Aronson

There’s a fashion revolution happening around Northern Arizona, and it’s coming from three Allie Ollie women’s clothing boutiques in Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff.

Dozens of women of every age throughout the Verde Valley are dressing up their wardrobes with unique, trendy and sophisticated Allie Ollie fashions, donning them at local events, barbeques, and restaurants.

I guess you could call my style “rural small town sorta-chic”??? But, thanks to Allie Ollie owner, Allie Olson, my wardrobe of late has turned sophisticated and stylish. This Fumbling Fashionista was in need of serious style assistance when I stumbled into Allie Ollie in the Oak Creek Outlet Mall in Sedona late one night this summer.

Honestly, as a certified “Fumbling Fashionista,” I’ve felt there simply wasn’t room for fabulous living in a rural community like Sedona, Prescott or Flagstaff (and I’ve lived in one of those three since 1993). This is no New York – where’s the space for bling, flair, fashion trends, and fabulous? My favorite articles of clothing are a pair of yoga pants and a loose fitting t-shirt!

I don’t know my Ugg’s from my square-toed loose, hooded boots and I have never worn a pair of leggings in my life. I don’t know which boots to wear this fall, when, or with what. I was just getting the hang of skinny jeans when I heard flared jeans were back in. The most “bling” I dangle from my ears is a pair of x-shaped diamond studs that my husband bought me, and I only wear them once a year to weddings or funerals.

But, all that changed the first time I walked into the Allie Ollie Boutique at The Factory Outlet Mall in Sedona’s Village of Oak Creek this summer, for an unexpected “styling session” with twenty-six year old Olson. Olson opened her first store in Sedona in 2009, and has since expanded with two more spacious and inviting boutiques in the Prescott Gateway Mall and, most recently, the Flagstaff Mall.

“Where in the world would I wear that?” I said to her, as the drool slipped down my chin, eyeing a gorgeous light pink patterned t-shirt dress.

She replied, exuberantly, “To the grocery store!”

Seeing my dumbfounded expression, she continued, “Why not?! What’s wrong with looking good wherever you go?”

“Um, I don’t know...” I replied, stuttering. “I would just feel...overdressed. I mean, we live in Sedona.”

But, since Allie opened her first store in West Sedona stemming out of a successful shop in Sedona’s Art Mart, “Small Town Chic” has taken on a new meaning. Lines like Sacred Threads, (ask her names of specific) patterns, glitz and bling have become the new Northern Arizona chic.

Looks to me like Allie has started a fashion revolution.

“Saw so many Allie Ollie shirts on all the women at the Harvest Festival [in Cottonwood] yesterday,” Monica Garland posts on the Allie Ollie Facebook Fan Page. And she’s right! Everywhere I look – at the grocery store (yes, I get the point now!), at the Jazz Fest, at the Film Fest, at Rendezvous in Old Town Cottonwood on a Friday Night, I see distinctive, recognizable Allie Ollie fashions.

In two hours with Allie, I rediscovered my own “inner diva”, and left the store with two leopard-print shopping bags full of twenty-five things I thought I would never buy (or wear!). I’ve worn these fashions every day of the summer (gaining heaps of compliments, might I add!) and now, as we slip slowly into the leaf-falling drops of autumn, I’m delighted to attend Allie’s upcoming, “Flair for Fall Wardrobing Workshop” at the Prescott Gateway Mall, on October 22nd.

Strangely, I thought she might have designed these workshops just for me when I read their titles: “The Basics Boot Camp,” “Using ‘Props’: Guide to Accessorizing,” “You’re Never Too Old for Leggings,” and “Flair For Fashion: Identifying Your Personal Style.” But, apparently, there are other women out there just like me, who could use a little style inspiration!

According to a Press Release, “Fall’s most fabulous evening of fashion, fun and ...flair,” will take place on October 22, at the Prescott Gateway Mall, at the Allie Ollie Boutique from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are only $20 each, and I think it’s well worth the $20 to save me from wearing my plain old, boring “last year’s” wardrobe all over again this fall. I’m putting a little pizzazz in my closet this year – and, I can afford it because at Allie Ollie, you can purchase an entire head-to-toe outfit for under $100.

On the 22nd, you’ll find me sipping on some sparkling champagne, snacking on delicious hors deourves, enjoying some classy live entertainment and, maybe even wearing my first pair of leggings, at Allie Ollie, making my “Fumbling Fashionista” © appearance. Hope to see you there!

Due to space, only forty tickets will be sold to the “Flair for Fall Wardrobing Workshop.” Purchase your tickets now by registering online at www.allieollie.com or call (928) 445-9915. Call to schedule a private “styling session” with Allie and her stylists and receive 10% off your entire bill!

Megan Aronson is “The Fumbling Fashionista”© as well as the former host of the TV show, “Out & About with Megan” in Sedona. She can be contacted at Megan.Aronson23@gmail.com or (928) 202-8193.

Trends to "fall" in love with!

Not every trend should be carried into day to day life nor worn by small town girls. There are a few peices coming in this season worth noting and wearing! These pieces will update any wardrobe and pair easily with existing styles you own. Looking updated does not require buying a whole new look every 3 months or walking around like some overdressed city slicker! Comfort and modern casual are the looks to seek. Once you own basics just pair some new accessories, a top or two, and one standout, key piece that embodies the season.

Feathers...Do it!
Everything from belts to earrings to hair extensions has become all about feathers! They are fun, attractive, and whimsical. If your new to wearing feathers, try a nuetral colored feather earring. For the extra fab...pick up a colorful hair feather extension or try a cinch belt with feather details.

Belt it!

Maybe it was madmen, or perhaps the Princess. Either way, belting is very "in" and not in the sense of adding a belt in loops. The current look is to belt over clothing, creating a more hourglass figure. We carry a variety of belt styles from western bling to skinny cinch. The look is more about how you belt than the width or color of said belt.

Order it up...animal style

If you don't know animal prints, specifically leopard, is all the rage, come out from under the rock! Animal prints can be very chic and are especially great paired with classic styles. The key here is understated. Where somewhere between 15 and 20 % animal print to achieve the chic version of this trend. Accessories are also a great way to work animal prints into your day to day wardrobe without feeling too wild.

Fall's key piece = PONCHO

Pack in the punch with a piece that is great for day with jeans / leggings and awesome at night with a palazzo pant or even a maxi skirt. Throw it over anything to look instantly cool and put togethor. The poncho is undoubtedly the one item you must have this fall!

Dressing for the fall hustle bustle!

The fall brings in a time of haste, bygone are the lazy sundress days of summer! Simplify the season with a wildly polished wardrobe by incorporating easy care pieces that fit your new go-to lifestyle!

If you have kids in the house this is your time to get a "back to school" wardrobe as well, and one that will be much needed. Rising early to drop kids at school, get to appointments, conferences, pta meetings, and of course much needed date nights and GNO. Build a fall wardrobe around pieces that dress up denim and are comfy for driving around in. Pick up a few great tunics and an assortment of leggings, the look is both very chic and put togethor.

For those of you without children in the home, lucky you! The travel season has begun and you should be investing in pieces that will be dynamic for day to day but also bring an easy elegance in packing for any trip. For a wardrobe update find a maxi skirt that can be convertable to a dinner out dress worn with a belt and jacket.  Be certain...to have traveler pieces such as our palazzo pants, shells, and an amazing coat that can transform any look.

Look to mom for style this spring

Take style tips from your mom this year as the pearls and hats you once played dress up in come into the limelight of modern fashion. Mom may have known more than you gave her credit for! As we look into the style of spring with garden inspired florals and nautical ensembles we realize our mothers and grandmothers had it right, dressing in an elegant theme as if to transend romance and class to any onlooker. We have entered a spring of timeless looks making a seasonal wardrobe update simple to achieve. This year, ask yourself, “is this beautiful? Or just a statement?” Feel pretty this year, not bold, with a few of our necessary updates:

-Striped something such as a navy  boatneck top

-A structured handbag that screams "lady"

-An amazing sunhat (for protection) but mostly flair

A nostalgia piece that reminds you of mom like pearls, a hair flower, or a tailored sundress
