Community unites to support families of children with cancer

On Jan. 20, Camp Soaring Eagle, a non-profit organization based in Sedona, welcomed 11 children and their families to a three-day Winter Oncology Retreat at Briar Patch Inn, a Bed & Breakfast located in Oak Creek Canyon.

The retreat was designed to give these families, who each have a child currently undergoing cancer treatment, a brief respite from medical treatments, doctors offices, and hospital rooms.

The 11 mothers attending the retreat also received a "Makeovers for Moms" day at Allie Ollie Boutique, located in the Village of Oak Creek, on Saturday, Jan. 21.

"The goal of Camp Soaring Eagle is to give kids with serious illnesses, and their families, a chance to discover the healing power of laughter, and the sheer joy of play that sickness has too long denied them," says Camp Soaring Eagle's Executive Director, Jennifer Perry. "We provide a camping experience filled with excitement, challenge, and fun, in a medically safe setting, all at no cost to the families."

From beauticians to magicians, golf pros to fitness instructors, the entire Northern Arizona community rallied to support Camp Soaring Eagle in this retreat. Dozens of businesses, organizations, and individuals volunteered their time or services, offering meals, transportation, fitness classes, archery instruction, animal interaction, and much more.

Among the list of volunteers who contributed all or part of their services were Briar Patch Inn, Allie Ollie Boutique, Pink Jeep Tours, Domino's Pizza, Red Rock Cafe, Red Rock Quilters, Babe's BBQ of Camp Verde, Gary Pearce of the Sedona Golf Resort, Aveda Red 115 Salon of Flagstaff, Kyle and Alicia French of Camp Verde, Noreen Ireland of Cornville, Magical Michael Steele, and Adobe Mountain Rescue Center of Phoenix.

Rob Olson, Owner of Briar Patch Inn, who is also a member of Camp Soaring Eagle's Board of Directors, donates his entire property and staff to host Camp Soaring Eagle's retreats twice a year.

This year, Olson's daughter, Allie Olson, decided to get involved, too, with the creation of the "Makeovers for Moms" day at her boutique in the Oak Creek Outlet Mall.

"I thought of the Moms - they are so focused on their children and their illnesses, they hardly ever think of themselves," said Olson. "I decided I wanted to give them an opportunity to treat themselves, to feel beautiful and fancy for one day."

On Jan. 21, a team of stylists welcomed the mothers at Allie Ollie Boutique, treating them to a complete shopping spree experience. Olson donated a head-to-toe outfit to each mother, and accessories to match.

Ingrid Dedmore, of Mesa, is the mother of 3-year-old, Alielah, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia a year and a half ago.

"This is the kind of thing you see on TV," said Dedmore. "You just never think, it could happen to me, " she says, as she points to her new fur-trimmed coat and jewelry she says reminds her of the beauty in life.

"Everyone thinks of the kids, of course," adds Annette Odom, whose 14-year-old daughter, Hope, is also undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. "But no one thinks of the Moms. This is just...beautiful. This entire weekend was amazing."

"I liken it to the old childhood story of Stone Soup," said Perry. "Seeing all these people come together from across Arizona to give these families one weekend of fun...was simply amazing."

ALLIE OLLIE HOSTS MAKEOVERS FOR MOMS OF CHILDREN WITH CANCER

Sedona, AZ, January 13, 2012 – On Saturday, January 21, at 1 p.m. the Allie Ollie Boutique in the Oak Creek Outlet Mall will become makeover central for eleven very deserving Moms. These Moms are wrestling more than grocery lists, dry cleaning and carpool schedules. They each have a child recently diagnosed with Cancer.

A team of Allie Ollie clothing stylists will provide these Moms with a fun afternoon of pampering as part of their weekend at the Camp Soaring Eagle Oncology Retreat at Briar Patch Inn, in Oak Creek Canyon.

This is the fourth Oncology Retreat that Camp Soaring Eagle has hosted at Briar Patch Inn, which generously donates its entire facility and staff to the campers and families for three days. “The goal of Camp Soaring Eagle is to give kids with serious illnesses and their families a chance to discover the healing power of laughter and the sheer joy of play, that sickness has too long denied them, by providing camping experiences filled with excitement, challenge and fun in a medically safe setting - all at no charge to the children or families,” says Jennifer Perry, Executive Director of Camp Soaring Eagle.

Complete head-to-toe outfits will be donated to each Mom by Allie Ollie Owner & Buyer, Allie Olson, 27. Olson owns three “outrageously fun” boutiques in Sedona, Prescott and Flagstaff that provide a unique shopping experience where “stylists” help customers find the looks that will make them look and feel their best.

Olson contacted Camp Soaring Eagle after hearing about the retreats from her Dad, Rob Olson, Owner of Briar Patch Inn and a member of the Camp Soaring Eagle Board of Directors. Olson said, “I thought, ‘These amazing women are so focused on their kids, they hardly ever think of themselves. I just wanted to give them an opportunity to treat themselves, to feel beautiful and fancy for one night.”

After the Moms receive the red carpet treatment at Allie Ollie, Pink Jeep Tours will transport them back to Briar Patch Inn where their children will enjoy a fun Bingo night, and parents will enjoy an adults-only evening at the Lodge.

Originally, only ten families were set to attend the Winter Retreat this year but at the last minute, Camp Soaring Eagle received a request from a very special family hoping to attend. The family’s youngest son was diagnosed with stage four lymphoblastic lymphoma leukemia in 2009, at the age of 10. Then, last week, the Mother received the shocking news that she herself has Ovarian Cancer.

“I called Rob at Briar Patch and asked if there was any way we could make room for this family,” says Perry. “They were already completely full, but somehow, he found a way to do it. Then I called Allie, and she offered to donate another complete outfit for this Mom. This is going to make a huge impact on this family at such a difficult time.”

Perry knows first-hand what kind of impact Camp Soaring Eagle can have on the families that attend their various camper weekends, travel programs and retreats. In 2011, the Camp welcomed a five year old boy who was born with Downs Syndrome and was later diagnosed with ALL Leukemia. “He was one of our most memorable campers – he spoke to our entire group and we were all moved,” remarked Perry.

A week after the family’s memorable weekend at camp, the boy died unexpectedly from a virus he contracted during chemotherapy treatment.

“Camp was the last memory his family had with him,” said Perry. “They weren’t at the hospital, worrying about bills and finances, they were in Sedona catching fish and doing arts and crafts. All I could think when I heard the news was, ‘Thank God they came, thank God they came.’”

Many local businesses and residents are also volunteering their time and services to support these families over the weekend including Babe’s BBQ of Camp Verde, Gary Pearce of the Sedona Golf Resort, Erin McDonald of Aveda in Flagstaff, Jean-Marie Nixon of Snap Fitness Sedona, Magical Michael Steele of Sedona, and many more.

From beauticians to magicians, golf pros to fitness instructors, the entire Northern Arizona community is making it possible for these families to enjoy one weekend of respite in beautiful Sedona.

There are 4 common dress codes for holiday parties:

Open House: Private party, typically in the home of friends / co-workers / family. Go outside the box, you are more fun than a red turtleneck ;) Try a poncho over palazzo pants, unexpected color schemes, glitzy tops, and an evening bag. Accessories finish the look so do add polish with a coordinate scarf and jewelry. Looking effortlessly fabulous is the key for open house parties and flowy clothing lends to this impression.

Cocktail Party: Can you say LBD (little black dress). The single most key piece in any evening wardrobe is the LBD. As such, they are sold everywear! The sweaters hanging on racks throughout Allie Olson's small store in the Flagstaff Mall are one of a kind.
The exotic designs incorporating ruffles, faux-fur lining and other flair are often a collaboration between Olson and West Coast clothing designers.
The 26-year-old businesswoman has worked closely with Los Angeles-based designers for the last three years to outfit her stores in Sedona, Prescott and, since August, here in Flagstaff.
In the beginning, Olson remembers leaving her home at 2 a.m. for "crazy" 24-hour trips to Los Angeles and back in order to pick out clothes for her 2,000-square-foot store in an outlet mall in Sedona.
Today, there are fewer 900-mile round trips on her calendar.
Owning a small chain of retail clothing stores allows Olson to work directly with designers. Her eye for detail has allowed her to carve out a niche in northern Arizona.
"You don't find them anywhere else. We have sweaters that have all kind of faux-fur trimmings and color -- just a lot of style for one piece of clothing," she said.
The stores carry more than just sweaters, of course. Allie Ollie sells dresses, tops, pants, jewelry, purses and other accessories.
Designer brands carried in her store include clothing from the Sharon Max collection, Danielle Jeans and Sacred Threads. The last line is a point of pride for Olson.
"They are a bit more hippie-influenced, natural-fiber clothing. I like that clothing line because it supports elevating women in India," Olson said.
Not that her customers in Flagstaff want the same items as customers in Prescott or Sedona.
"In Flagstaff, it is kind of fun for me because we are carrying things here we don't carry at the other stores," she said. "It is little bit more casual."
The stores are a culmination of a long-held dream of hers.
"I've known I wanted to have clothing stores since I was a little girl," Olson said.
But in 2008, at the height of the recession, Olson found little support among her family and friends.
"They were never highly encouraging," she said. "They never discouraged me, but they didn't write a check."
Instead, she wrote the check from the savings she had amassed while working as both a Realtor and an appraiser.
"I saved it all; it took me years to do it," Olson said.
She argued to anyone willing to listen that women still wanted to shop, even in a recession. Olson said women shop for new outfits for a variety of reasons, noting even those who lose their job might need a new outfit for a job interview.
"I had the goal where adult women could shop and find trends as well as great basics," she said.
The store's name -- taken from what her father called her as a little girl -- is now synonymous in the mind of some northern Arizona shoppers with that same goal of specialty shopping for adult women.

There’s a fashion revolution happening around Northern Arizona, and it’s coming from three Allie Ollie women’s clothing boutiques in Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff.

Dozens of women of every age throughout the Verde Valley are dressing up their wardrobes with unique, trendy and sophisticated Allie Ollie fashions, donning them at local events, barbeques, and restaurants.

I guess you could call my style “rural small town sorta-chic”??? But, thanks to Allie Ollie owner, Allie Olson, my wardrobe of late has turned sophisticated and stylish. This Fumbling Fashionista was in need of serious style assistance when I stumbled into Allie Ollie in the Oak Creek Outlet Mall in Sedona late one night this summer.

Honestly, as a certified “Fumbling Fashionista,” I’ve felt there simply wasn’t room for fabulous living in a rural community like Sedona, Prescott or Flagstaff (and I’ve lived in one of those three since 1993). This is no New York – where’s the space for bling, flair, fashion trends, and fabulous? My favorite articles of clothing are a pair of yoga pants and a loose fitting t-shirt!

I don’t know my Ugg’s from my square-toed loose, hooded boots and I have never worn a pair of leggings in my life. I don’t know which boots to wear this fall, when, or with what. I was just getting the hang of skinny jeans when I heard flared jeans were back in. The most “bling” I dangle from my ears is a pair of x-shaped diamond studs that my husband bought me, and I only wear them once a year to weddings or funerals.

But, all that changed the first time I walked into the Allie Ollie Boutique at The Factory Outlet Mall in Sedona’s Village of Oak Creek this summer, for an unexpected “styling session” with twenty-six year old Olson. Olson opened her first store in Sedona in 2009, and has since expanded with two more spacious and inviting boutiques in the Prescott Gateway Mall and, most recently, the Flagstaff Mall.

“Where in the world would I wear that?” I said to her, as the drool slipped down my chin, eyeing a gorgeous light pink patterned t-shirt dress.

She replied, exuberantly, “To the grocery store!”

Seeing my dumbfounded expression, she continued, “Why not?! What’s wrong with looking good wherever you go?”

“Um, I don’t know...” I replied, stuttering. “I would just feel...overdressed. I mean, we live in Sedona.”

But, since Allie opened her first store in West Sedona stemming out of a successful shop in Sedona’s Art Mart, “Small Town Chic” has taken on a new meaning. Lines like Sacred Threads, (ask her names of specific) patterns, glitz and bling have become the new Northern Arizona chic.

Looks to me like Allie has started a fashion revolution.

“Saw so many Allie Ollie shirts on all the women at the Harvest Festival [in Cottonwood] yesterday,” Monica Garland posts on the Allie Ollie Facebook Fan Page. And she’s right! Everywhere I look – at the grocery store (yes, I get the point now!), at the Jazz Fest, at the Film Fest, at Rendezvous in Old Town Cottonwood on a Friday Night, I see distinctive, recognizable Allie Ollie fashions.

In two hours with Allie, I rediscovered my own “inner diva”, and left the store with two leopard-print shopping bags full of twenty-five things I thought I would never buy (or wear!). I’ve worn these fashions every day of the summer (gaining heaps of compliments, might I add!) and now, as we slip slowly into the leaf-falling drops of autumn, I’m delighted to attend Allie’s upcoming, “Flair for Fall Wardrobing Workshop” at the Prescott Gateway Mall, on October 22^nd.

Strangely, I thought she might have designed these workshops just for me when I read their titles: “The Basics Boot Camp,” “Using ‘Props’: Guide to Accessorizing,” “You’re Never Too Old for Leggings,” and “Flair For Fashion: Identifying Your Personal Style.” But, apparently, there are other women out there just like me, who could use a little style inspiration!

According to a Press Release, “Fall’s most fabulous evening of fashion, fun and ...flair,” will take place on October 22, at the Prescott Gateway Mall, at the Allie Ollie Boutique from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are only $20 each, and I think it’s well worth the $20 to save me from wearing my plain old, boring “last year’s” wardrobe all over again this fall. Trends to "fall" in love with!
